Shenandoah Man Locked Up in Schuylkill County Prison on Arson Charges


A Shenandoah man is locked up in Schuylkill County Prison for starting a fire in the borough on Thursday.

According to Shenandoah Police, on Thursday, May 11th, 2023, around 8:00pm, Shenandoah Police Lieutenant Travis Bowman and Patrolman Hugh Clinton responded to 11 north West Street for a fire. 

On scene police learned that someone set fire to mattresses that were leaning against the porch of 11 North West Street.

The mattress fire spread to the porch roof of 11 North West Street which caused substantial damage. The incident was captured on video and the suspect was identified as 47-year-old John Mayeresky,  from 151 West Washington Street.

Police went to Mayeresky's home, and when he answered the door, he was wearing the same clothing as in the video. Mayeresky was taken into custody and arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Magistrate Judge Edward Tarantelli on charges of arson, risking a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. 

Mayeresky was transported to Schuylkill County Prison unable to post the $75,000 straight cash bail set by Judge Tarantelli.
