Blue Mountain Leads Schuylkill County in 2025 PSSA Results; Most Local Districts Fall Below Statewide Middle of the Pack

Schuylkill County’s 2025 PSSA results reveal significant variation in student performance among local districts when compared both within the county and across Pennsylvania.

Using statewide district-level PSSA data for grades 3–8, Skook News analyzed the percentage of students scoring Proficient or Advanced in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. When averaged across all tested grades and subjects, Blue Mountain School District ranked first in Schuylkill County and landed at 211th out of roughly 500 school districts statewide.

Blue Mountain posted an overall average of 48.6% of students scoring Proficient or Above, with particularly strong performance in English Language Arts at 52.7% and Math at 44.6%.

Close behind locally was Pine Grove Area School District, which finished second in the county with an overall proficiency average of 46.3% and a statewide rank of 256. Pine Grove also showed one of the strongest Math profiles in the region, averaging 45.3% Proficient or Above in Math.

Rounding out the top tier in Schuylkill County were:

  • Tri-Valley SD41.9% overall, ranked 321st statewide
  • Saint Clair Area SD38.9% overall, ranked 358th statewide
  • Schuylkill Haven Area SD38.6% overall, ranked 367th statewide

These districts sit around the statewide middle of the pack, reflecting solid but not elite performance relative to other Pennsylvania schools.

On the other end of the spectrum, several Schuylkill County districts landed near the bottom of statewide rankings. Mahanoy Area SD, Shenandoah Valley SD, and Williams Valley SD all posted overall averages under 20% Proficient or Above:

  • Williams Valley SD19.0% overall, statewide rank 478
  • Shenandoah Valley SD18.7% overall, statewide rank 480
  • Mahanoy Area SD16.0% overall, statewide rank 485

Countywide trends follow a familiar pattern seen across Pennsylvania: ELA scores generally outpace Math scores, but both subjects show significant variation depending on the district. For example, Minersville, Schuylkill Haven, and Tri-Valley all posted notably stronger averages in ELA than in Math, suggesting reading and writing skills are outpacing math achievement in several local schools.

Between the top and bottom, districts like Pottsville Area, Tamaqua Area, North Schuylkill, and Minersville Area clustered in the low-to-mid 30% range for overall proficiency, placing them below the statewide middle but above the county’s lowest-performing districts.

Educators and administrators are expected to use the 2025 PSSA data to evaluate curriculum, target interventions, and plan for future improvement. As districts work to close achievement gaps and raise proficiency levels, these rankings provide a snapshot of where Schuylkill County stands—both internally and against the rest of Pennsylvania.
