According to the Reading Police Department, officers were first called to the 3rd and Spruce Recreation Center around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 1, 2026, for reports of shots fired during an event being held inside the facility.
When police arrived, they located two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities said their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Police said the shooting occurred during a privately rented basketball tournament taking place at the recreation center that evening.
Following several days of investigation, detectives identified a suspect and obtained an arrest warrant.
Early Thursday morning, February 5, 2026, members of the Reading Police Department, working alongside the United States Marshals Service, apprehended Roylin Cabral-Villa, 18, in Girardville, Schuylkill County. Authorities described Cabral-Villa as a teen from Schuylkill County. The arrest was made without incident.
Cabral-Villa is charged with:
- Aggravated Assault
- Risking Catastrophe
- Firearms Not to Be Carried Without a License
- Recklessly Endangering Another Person
Mayor Eddie MorĂ¡n addressed the incident in a statement earlier in the week.
“My thoughts are with the two individuals who were injured and their families. There is no place for violence in our city. I’m grateful for the quick response from our police officers and first responders, and I’m relieved that the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. It’s disappointing to see how quickly rumors and assumptions can spread before all the facts are known. This is an active investigation, and while I understand people want answers, there are limits to what can be shared right now. We will continue working closely with law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable and keep our community safe.”
Police noted that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
