A Trevorton woman faces two felony charges after investigators said she filed a renters insurance claim alleging a burglary at an Ashland apartment from which she had been evicted.
Alyia May Adams, 35, was charged Wednesday, September 16, with insurance fraud and attempted theft by deception. Both charges are third-degree felonies, according to court records.
What Investigators Allege About the Insurance Claim
In a criminal complaint filed by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, investigators allege Adams told Lemonade Insurance that belongings had been stolen from her former Centre Street apartment during a burglary on October 28, 2024. She filed the claim on January 22, 2025, seeking payment for items valued at more than $2,000.
The complaint says Adams had been evicted from the apartment on October 7, 2024. Her belongings were moved to a storage unit, and she was given instructions for retrieving them, according to investigators. Lemonade reviewed information from Ashland Police and the property manager before denying the claim on February 20, 2025.
State investigators interviewed Adams in July 2026. According to the complaint, she acknowledged that she had been evicted and had filed a false claim for items she said were stolen.
Preliminary Hearing Scheduled
Adams was arraigned Wednesday before Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli. Bail was set at $10,000 unsecured, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 30.
The charges are allegations. Adams is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
