Two Schuylkill County Fire Companies Receive Grants

On Friday, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has awarded two Schuylkill County fire departments each with Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFGs). The funds will be distributed via the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

General Motors is recalling nearly 780,000 SUVs in North America due to the rear power lift gates can suddenly fall and hit people.

Berks County Elementary School Destroyed By Tornado

A Berks County Elementary School was destroyed by a tornado on Thursday.

When storms blew through Schuylkill County late Thursday afternoon, who would have thought a tornado would have been passing just to our south.

Media outlets later began reporting late Thursday showing images of the Blue Mountain Adventist Elementary School had collapsed during the storms. Videos by eyewitnesses began to show what really damaged the school.

The National Weather Service was on-site Friday morning to investigate and later confirmed that it was indeed a tornado that destroyed the school.  The NWS classified the tornado as an EF-1 with winds up to 105 mph.

The school's principal was the only person in the school at the time and was not injured.

Interstate 81 Closed Due to Crash

Interstate 81 Southbound was closed at exit 100 (Pine Grove) around 8pm Thursday evening due to a crash.


Reports are the crash involved a tractor trailer fire.

As of 9:15pm, the interstate has reopened.
