Schuylkill County Legislators Release Statements on Potential Prison Closures

Earlier Friday, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections announced a plan to close or reduce the population of at least 2 State Prisons from a list 5, one which is SCI Frackville in Schuylkill County.

Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks) and Representatives Neal Goodman (D-Schuylkill), Jerry Knowles (R-Berks/Carbon/Schuylkill) and Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill/Dauphin) released the following statement regarding the governor’s decision to close two state correctional institutions out of five under consideration, one including SCI Frackville:

Department of Corrections Announces Plan to Close or Reduce State Prisons; One From Schuylkill County

On Friday, the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections announced a plan to close or reduce the population of at least one State Prison on Schuylkill County.

Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel met with union officials and the agency’s leadership team to discuss the plan to close two prisons and reduce by half the community corrections population by June 30, 2017, as part of spending reductions in response to the state budget deficit.

Pottsville Man Allegedly Assaults Police Officer in Berks County

A Pottsville man allegedly assaulted a Police Officer in Berks County this past weekend.


According to the Reading Eagle, Aaron Davis, 32, of Pottsville, led Wyomissing Police on a foot chase in a store parking lot after Police say he met the description of a report of someone looking in car windows of a parking lot.

The chase concluded in a TJ Maxx where Davis allegedly assaulted the officer, who then had to a taser on Davis to subdue him.

Davis was found with hundreds of dollars in stolen merchandise and charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, trespassing, retail theft, and receiving stolen property.
